Hello Fairy!
Wednesday, 31 August 2011 12:40
The following stop motion video was made independently and entirely (with the exception of added music & school logo at the end) by Gabrielle and Rylee at the Wednesday afternoon Film Club. They are both in grade two. It shows how accessible the stop motion software is when combined with a laptop webcam. They placed a white board on wheels in front of the laptop, started the stop-motion program, moulded their characters out of plastercine, and created what you see below.

Cool School

The Year 3/4/5 class are taking a novel approach to energy conservation. For the next few weeks students in the class will be trying out a different kind of fridge – a chest freezer that uses a special gadget* to keep the inside temperature between 4-7 degrees celcius.
This Science & Sustainability project began at the beginning of term with students investigating the behaviour of hot and cold air. They learnt that cold air is heavier than hot air and whereas hot air rises, cold air sinks. So when you open the door of a traditional upright fridge, the cold air falls out the bottom (and you get cold feet). It takes a lot of energy to replace that cold air. A chest freezer however does not have that problem and is also better insulated than an upright fridge. It could potentially be ideal for storing school lunchboxes, as well as save the school energy and money.
The class have measured and compared the energy use and inside temperatures of both fridges. Early figures show that after 30 hours of use the upright fridge, with an inside temperature of 10ºc, had used 1.4kWh but the chest fridge, with an inside temperature of 5ºc, had used 0.7kWh. Students will continue monitoring both fridges, looking also at the user-friendliness of the chest fridge, and will report at the end of term whether or not the trial of the chest fridge was a success.
